AOL

BROWSER IMAGE QUALITY

When America Online users launch a webpage internally (through the AOL software), AOL settings limit the quality of the images by default. This compression method results in significantly poor image quality and diminished coloring.

The intent of the compression is to speed up page loading, by making the images on the webpage smaller in size. This would be a great idea except 98% of all webpage graphics are already compressed (by the authors who distinguish the settings) and recompressing them saves little space (only 2-3KB), while greatly decreasing quality.

Fortunately AOL has made it easy to change the image quality settings. If you would like to view webpages the way they were meant to be viewed we recommend you follow these easy steps:

  • Click the 'My AOL' button on the toolbar
  • Select the "Preferences' button
  • Then select the 'WWW' option
  • Go to the "Web Graphics" tab
  • Uncheck the "Use compressed graphics" box
  • Click OK.

Unchecking Compressed Graphics

If you decide you don't like this setting, simply return to the "Web Graphics" tab and this time check the "Use compressed graphics"
